About the Art Director

Joanne Renaud, who earned a BFA in illustration from Art Center College of Design, has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember. She grew up loving the artwork of Gustave Moreau and John Williams Waterhouse, which she first discovered in the Enchanted World Series from Time Life books, which also included lots of wonderfully dark legends and folk tales. Favorite writers that have both inspired and traumatized her included Oscar Wilde, Tanith Lee, C.S. Lewis and Stephen King. She went to college in a variety of places, including Northern Ireland and Southern California, and in the process discovered acrylic paint and a lifelong love of painting all kinds of historical costume. She is perfectly happy in the 21st century, surfing the web and listening to Depeche Mode remixes, but likes the elegance and flair provided by old styles, that’s not really there with jeans and an Ed Hardy T-shirt.

She currently works as a freelance illustrator. Her clients include Simon & Schuster, Random House, Houghton Mifflin, Macmillan-McGraw Hill, Harcourt Inc., Zaner Bloser, Trillium Publishing, and Astonishing Adventures Magazine.
